SPEAKING ENGAGeMENTS

One of the best compliments I ever received came from a former student that had recommended my class to her friend by suggesting that studying with me was like “taking classes with the real Peter Pan.”

I’ve been teaching for over twenty-five years and I can say without reservation that it’s just as thrilling today as it was when I started. Learning is alive; I love the excitement and energy that comes with the exchange of ideas.

I’ve delivered hundreds of talks over the years and each presentation I deliver is customized for the specific context—I don’t believe in repeat performances—and I carry the same passion I hold for teaching with me every time I take the stage.

WORKSHOPS

I’ve facilitated workshops in schools and universities across the USA and internationally, and I’ve published numerous articles and book chapters about the teaching of writing, project-based learning, student publication and genre theory in English JournalEnglish EducationTeachers and Writers, to name a few.

During my twelve years as a full-time lecturer at Columbia University’s school of education I received the College’s Outstanding Teaching Award four times, as well as an award from the college president for my innovations in education. My workshops are challenging and lively, collaborative and fun.

DISTRICT-WIDE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Through my work as an independent literacy consultant, I supported schools in the United States and abroad to rethink the role of project-based learning across the curriculum. In this position I have helped launch student press projects in Northern India and Bosnia, digital annotation projects in California, and most recently a literacy initiative in Massachusetts called, “For the Love of Reading.”
